At Coinage x DAIC, we're honored to serve as validators for Somnia's network, having participated in its testnet journey and successful mainnet deployment. The six-month testing period saw Somnia handle over 2 billion transactions, including a remarkable single-day EVM milestone of more than 80 million transactions. Our hands-on experience during this phase has demonstrated the transformative potential of high-performance blockchain infrastructure.

As part of a 61-validator network during testing, we collaborated with fellow validators to ensure network stability, maintain security, and deliver consistent performance even during peak transaction periods. This diverse validator ecosystem not only enhanced network decentralization but also proved the system's ability to scale performance alongside growing transaction demands. With mainnet now operational, we're excited to power the infrastructure.

Somnia Tech Stack

To address the demanding requirements of fully on-chain applications, Somnia has fundamentally reimagined blockchain architecture. Every component, from novel consensus mechanisms to purpose-built databases, has been meticulously designed for maximum efficiency. Here are the key innovations driving Somnia's unprecedented performance:

  • Somnia's MultiStream Consensus draws inspiration from the Autobahn BFT research, proposing a revolutionary approach to scalable blockchain design. In this system, each validator operates its own independent data chain while a separate consensus layer handles finalization. This architecture maintains high throughput and prevents performance degradation during transaction volume spikes
  • Rather than relying on parallel execution approaches that struggle with highly correlated transactions, Somnia employs Accelerated Sequential Execution to optimize single-core transaction processing speed. The system compiles EVM bytecode into optimized native code, enabling modern CPUs to leverage hardware-level parallelism within individual threads for exceptional throughput.
  • IceDB represents Somnia's custom blockchain database solution, engineered to deliver consistent read and write performance even under extreme workloads. Unlike traditional options such as LevelDB or RocksDB, where latency varies significantly based on RAM versus disk access, IceDB meticulously tracks and reports the precise cost of every state access, including cold cache lines and disk page reads. This enables accurate gas metering based on actual system load while maintaining consistency across all network nodes.

The database achieves in-memory cache reads in just 15-100 nanoseconds and incorporates built-in snapshotting for rapid state commits without expensive Merkle tree updates. This architecture ensures predictable block execution, minimizes stalls, and maintains high throughput even during peak traffic periods.

Somnia's architecture implements advanced compression techniques to minimize validator communication bandwidth while sustaining extreme transaction throughput. Unlike traditional block-by-block compression that treats each block independently (limiting compression ratios and creating redundant data transmission), Somnia's data chain model enables validators to maintain continuous data streams. This allows compression algorithms to utilize the complete history of recent transactions for superior encoding efficiency.

Additionally, Somnia employs BLS signature aggregation, consolidating thousands of individual transaction signatures into single aggregated signatures per batch. This dramatically reduces uncompressible data, allowing the network to approach the physical bandwidth limits of participating validators without centralizing block production.

Somnia Ecosystem

Somnia's ecosystem is experiencing rapid expansion, with over 70 partners developing applications across gaming, artificial intelligence, decentralized finance, and social platforms. This includes competitive multiplayer games, large-scale social environments, creator-driven marketplaces, and AI-enhanced experiences. Strategic integrations with established platforms like LayerZero, Sequence, Ankr, DIA, and Thirdweb provide developers with familiar tools while ensuring seamless interoperability within the broader web3 ecosystem. Enterprise partnerships with Google Cloud, Fireblocks, and BitGo deliver the essential infrastructure, security, and services required for large-scale adoption.

From our validator perspective, witnessing the ecosystem's diversity is particularly exciting, encompassing projects from games like Sparkball, Variance, and Maelstrom to creator platforms and financial applications. Each new Somnia deployment represents additional network activity for validators like us to process and secure.

Developer UX

Web3 development has traditionally presented steep learning curves, but Somnia is reducing these barriers through tools that accelerate the journey from concept to deployment. Somnia Builder, developed in partnership with Sequence, exemplifies this approach as a low-code platform combining Sequence's modular web3 infrastructure (including wallets, smart contracts, gasless relayers, analytics, and marketplaces) with Somnia's high-performance Layer-1 capabilities.

Through Somnia Builder, developers can package assets, configure game logic, and deploy fully onchain games and applications without writing custom smart contracts or managing backend infrastructure. SDKs for Unity, Unreal, TypeScript, and React Native enable web3 feature integration across multiple platforms. Built-in onboarding allows players to sign in using familiar accounts like Google or Apple and begin interacting immediately without browser extensions or upfront gas fees.

This approach empowers builders to launch production-ready, composable experiences featuring custom in-game economies with configurable royalties, cross-game asset interoperability, and real-time, player-owned environments—all without requiring deep blockchain expertise.
