About Walrus (WAL)

Walrus is a cutting-edge decentralized storage solution from Mysten Labs, the creators renowned for the Sui layer-1 blockchain. It represents their dedicated effort to provide a robust and highly efficient platform tailored for storing and accessing substantial amounts of digital data online.

Central to its innovation is programmable storage, a feature that creates new opportunities in application development. By allowing custom logic to be attached directly to stored data, Walrus allows developers to build far more dynamic and interactive experiences for their users. This revolutionary capability is made possible by cutting-edge data encoding technology designed to optimize performance, exceptional data resilience against network failures, and seamless scalability to meet growing demand.

From powering decentralized websites and enabling sophisticated dApps to being the underlying infrastructure for blockchain ecosystems, Walrus offers a general-purpose infrastructure layer for a wide range of Web3 applications. With the confidence inspired by substantial funding ($140 million) and the proven technical expertise of Mysten Labs, Walrus is positioned as a significant and forward-thinking force in the evolution of decentralized data solutions.

What Makes Walrus Special?

Walrus stands out in the decentralized storage space due to several core advantages:

Innovative Programmable Storage: Instead of just storing, it allows data itself to be an engaged, logic-based component of applications, enabling more advanced dApp functionality through smart contract interaction (specifically through Sui).

Substantial Cost Savings:  Optimized with advanced encoding techniques to offer potentially substantial reductions in on-chain storage costs compared to existing alternatives like Filecoin or Arweave.

High Performance & Data Resilience: Designed with quick data retrieval rates suitable for applications with high demands, while offering certainty that information is highly available and recoverable.

Solid Support & Ecosystem: Developed by the reputable Mysten Labs (Sui creators), with in-built technical credibility and extensive integration possibility within the Sui ecosystem.

Web3-Centric Foundation: Conceived as a versatile infrastructure layer to accommodate a wide variety of decentralized storage needs, ranging from individual projects and websites to potentially backing a diversity of blockchain networks.

Walrus Staking FAQ

What is the WAL Token Used For?

The native token, WAL, is essential to the Walrus network's operation. Its primary functions include covering fees for data storage services, rewarding network participants - like storage node operators and delegators who stake tokens - for securing the network, and potentially empowering holders to participate in future governance decisions regarding the protocol's direction.

Where to Buy Walrus (WAL) Token?

WAL tokens are available for purchase through trading on several centralized cryptocurrency exchanges that have listed the asset. To purchase WAL, you should look at what platforms have trading pairs available. Sites such as CoinGecko or CoinMarketCap usually provide up-to-date market information.

How to stake Walrus (WAL)?

You can stake your Walrus (WAL) tokens via the Walrus Staking Interface.

Which Wallets Support Staking Walrus (WAL)?

To stake WAL, you generally need a cryptocurrency wallet compatible with the Sui blockchain ecosystem. Importantly, besides holding the WAL you intend to stake, you will also need a small amount of SUI tokens in the same wallet to cover network transaction fees. Staking actions are performed by connecting your compatible wallet to the official Walrus Staking Interface. Always ensure you are interacting with official applications when connecting your wallet.

How Are Walrus (WAL) Staking Rewards Calculated and Earned?

Staking rewards are based on a variable APR (Annual Percentage Rate) influenced by network activity and protocol parameters. You earn rewards proportionally based on the amount of WAL you stake to an eligible validator in the "Current Committee" relative to that node's total stake. Rewards are earned each epoch (approximately two weeks). Keep in mind that rewards begin accruing once your stake becomes active, which typically takes one to two epochs, depending on when you initiated the stake within the epoch cycle. Besides, rewards are only earned while your chosen storage node is part of the active “Current Committee”. Be aware that validator operators do charge a commission fee on earned rewards. Rates differ among validators, so do make sure of the specific commission of any validator you are considering prior to delegating.

What are the WAL Tokenomics?

Walrus protocol features a fixed maximum supply of 5 billion WAL tokens. Most of supply (60% according to reports) is reserved towards ensuring long-term ecosystem wellness, funding community building activities (which has included phased airdrops), and providing ongoing network rewards. Circulating supply at mainnet launch was around 1.25 billion WAL (25%).

What Are the Risks Involved in Staking Walrus (WAL)?

Participating in WAL staking involves risks common to delegate Proof-of-Stake (dPoS) networks. These include potential 'slashing' – penalties to validators for malicious behavior or extended unavailability, affecting delegated tokens – and inherent market volatility in the price of the WAL token. Selecting experienced and reliable validators from the “Current Committee” via the official Walrus Staking Interface is crucial for optimizing rewards and mitigating risks.
